Blue Flamingo

by Cristy Reyes

I am a visual artist who began her journey wanting to be a writer. I studied a degree in Hispanic Literature at the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes because I loved writing and reading, it was something I did very naturally and that at the time I came to enjoy very much. Towards the middle of my college studies, I discovered the subject of illustration, I started with sketches in a notebook and each time I did it taking more care of my technique and with more frequency.

Drawing is something I’ve loved to do since I was a kid, but I didn’t take it seriously until 2019 when I entered the summer animation residency at The California Institute of the Arts and for five weeks I had a very comprehensive approach to this industry. I discovered that animation wasn’t the path for me either, but I learned a ton and also shared a floor with 5 visual artists that changed my life. I became close friends with three of them and they invited me to see their open studio the last week of the residency. I never believed that people so close to me could create such meaningful work, at that moment something clicked inside me, but it took me a little longer to figure it out. Up until that point Blue Flamingo was a brand of custom portraits and merchandise with mostly custom illustrations, it was a brand that didn’t feel 100% aligned with me, but it was a place to start.

In 2021 I decided that I wanted to explore my career as a visual artist and with the advice of my roommates, I organized my first solo exhibition in the city of Aguascalientes. It was called “Rosa” and I exhibited seven different works with the theme of love. In October of the same year I participated in a group exhibition at the Soph Art gallery in Polanco, CDMX and in November I had my second personal exhibition “Hiatos” at the Madama gallery in Aguascalientes.

Thanks to art, a  project that I co-founded with Daniela Álvarez Heredia called Metamorfia was born. It started with an art workshop for teenagers at the Agua Viva shelter and today it is in the process of becoming an organization that helps teenagers to develop in an wholesome way through workshops such as sexual education, self-esteem, healthy relationships, personal finances and art therapy among others.

This path has led me to rethink many things and to prioritize what sets my soul on fire. Blue Flamingo is now my most intimate creative space. Here you will find a piece of my soul in each of my artworks and you will be able to get to know me in a much more personal way.
